Why do broadcast applications need high refresh rates?
High refresh rates (3840Hz+) prevent banding and scan lines when LED panels are captured by cameras. Lower refresh rates can cause visible artifacts, especially with high-speed cameras shooting at 60fps or higher. For slow-motion work, even higher refresh rates (7680Hz+) may be needed.
What pixel pitch is best for virtual production?
For virtual production (VP/XR stages), pixel pitches of 1.5mm or less are typically recommended. The closer camera proximity and need for sharp in-camera content requires fine pitch displays. Many VP stages use 1.2-1.5mm panels for the main LED volume, with finer pitch (under 1mm) for areas closer to camera.
How important is color accuracy for broadcast LED?
Critical. Broadcast panels should offer wide color gamut (Rec.2020 or similar), precise calibration, and consistent color across all panels. Look for panels with Brompton Tessera or similar professional processing that supports accurate color space management and HDR workflows.
What is frame remapping and why does it matter for broadcast?
Frame remapping (also called genlock) synchronizes the LED refresh with the camera shutter to eliminate scan line artifacts. Brompton processors excel at this. Without proper frame remapping, you may see horizontal bands in footage. This is essential for any professional broadcast or film production.
Can I use broadcast panels for live events as well as studio work?
Yes, broadcast-grade panels work excellently for live events—they offer superior image quality for both live audiences and IMAG (image magnification) cameras. The higher cost is justified when events are being broadcast or recorded. For pure live-audience viewing without cameras, standard touring panels may be more cost-effective.
